This is the Christo Redentor statue (Christ the Redeemer) . It is located in Rio de Janeiro on the peak of Corcorado Mountain in the Tijuca Forest. It is 98 feet tall and that is not including the 26 foot pedestal. It was first suggested in the mid-1850s by Catholic Priest Pedro Maria Boss but was dismissed in 1889 when Brazil became a republic with their laws mandating separation of church and state. The 2nd time it was suggested was in 1920 by the Catholic Circle of Rio. The local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa designed the and it was sculpted by Polish-French sculptor Paul Landowski. It was constructed between 1922 and 1931.

This is a picture of the Amazon. A majority of the forest is contained within Brazil with 60% of the rain forest. Peru, Colombia and 6 other countries have little bits of it as well. The name is said to arise from a war Francisco de Orellana (Spanish explorer and conquistador. Completed the first know navigation of the entire length of the Amazon River). The river has existed for at least 55 million years. It is sparsely populated.

This is Dunas de Natal (dunes of Natal). It is located in the city of Natal in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This is an area of tourism which generates income to the population. Here you can ride quads and dirt bikes. It is a very beautiful spot. It is considered the second largest park in Brazil.

This is the San Francisco River. It begins in the Canastra Mountains in the state of Minas Gerais. It passes through the staes of Minas Gerais, Bahia, Sergipe, Pernambuco, and Alagoas. It is the longest river that runs through Brazil only. This river doesn't run through any other country. San Francisco River provides water to the states and it is very important to their economy.

This is Brasilia. It is the federal capital of Brazil and capital of the Federal District. The president at the time that Brasilia was created, Juscelino Kubitschek (1956-1961), ordered the construction of Brasilia. Brasilia was planned and developed by Lucio Costa and his close friend Oscar Niemeyer in 1956. The landscape architect was Roberto Burle Marx. It was founded April 21, 1960. Brasilia holds all 3 branches of Brazil's government. The city also hosts 124 foreign embassies. A quick fun fact is that it is shaped like an airplane.
